Kevin Elyot

Ruby, baby

“So, who do you wanna be?
You can be anyone in the world!

You can be me if you want.
And I’ll be you.

That would be nice.”

I wrote Ruby, Baby during my time as writer-in-residence at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection. In 2022 I was the recipient of the Kevin Elyot Award, allowing me time in his archive to help develop a new piece of work. I was hugely inspired by Elyot’s ability to find humour and humanity in prickly themes such as sex, grief, and generational longing - particularly in his plays The Day I Stood Still and Forty Winks. My time with Kevin’s generous notebooks, drafts, and scripts has helped me become a better writer, and I am forever indebted to him and the staff at the Theatre Collection.

Ruby, Baby is a work-in-progress script inspired by The Kevin Elyot Award. If you’d like more information, feel free to get in touch via my contact page.
