if anyone wants me i’ll be in my room
Malaika Kegode and Handina Dutiro are sisters based in Bristol. Malaika – the older of the two – is a writer and spoken word artist with a background in film and theatre, while younger sister Handina is a songwriter and self-taught music producer. The pair grew up in Devon singing and playing instruments together, bonded by a love and passion for music.
Over their residency with MAYK, the pair are excited to explore the theme of bedrooms, girlhood, and belonging. They’re going to be making weird noises and being messy while discovering new stories to tell, and creating new environments to tell them in.
I Like It. What is it?
I Like It. What Is It? is a two-year residency programme hosted by MAYK and supported by Jerwood Arts.
The residency prioritises care, slow-working, and play. Artists will be encouraged to explore ideas that feel challenging, elusive, or difficult without being beholden to production schedules. There’s no restriction on form or theme. It’s time to play again.
I Like It. What Is It? is an attempt to move away from what sometimes feels like an insatiable industry appetite for the zeitgeist. We want artists to be able to slow down, to remember.
